Homemade Buttermilk Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into 4 chunks
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract, or coconut extract, or almond extract

Instructions

  • Add sugar, buttermilk, butter and salt to a large 3 quart saucepan. Stir and heat mixture over medium heat, bringing to a boil stirring frequently.
  • Once it boils reduce heat to low and let simmer 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat then whisk in baking soda and vanilla extract. Note that it will bubble up and foam high (which is why a large saucepan is essential).
  • Serve foamy or whisk for about 30 seconds if you’d like less bubbles. Serve warm over breakfast or dessert of choice (such as pancakes , French toast , crepes , waffles , or bread pudding ).

Notes

  • In addition to vanilla extract you can also add 1 tsp ground cinnamon for a cinnamon flavored syrup.
  • Another delicious way to make this is with 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup honey.
